Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2006

My tag with Reason for the run)
- hey u all dont anyhow use my 4 lucky numbers to buy 4D yo. haha :)

Again I completed my Marathon race for the 2nd time round on 3rd Dec 2006. However this year, it was still quite a bad condition for me too. (talk about it later). In this year’s event, the total participants are about 30,000 which was an 50% increase from last year.

This year race is a bit special, as each one of us gets to have an additional piece of tag during the collection of the race pack for writing your reason to run for the race. It will to be pinned behind our runner attire/singlet for remind ourselves why we run the race and also as an alternate method to motivate and encourage other runners behind not to give up and continue with the race.

However not every runners write their reasons on their additional tag on the event day. I did write my reason on the additional tag as a form to encourage myself and also to motivate others. The reason I wrote was “THE WILL TO WIN – Start and END the Race with Determination” which is shown in the picture above. In the reason, I have used my school motto as my form of encouragement.

This time round, 1 of my NTU classmates, Wei Rong also joined me in the race and it is his first time taking part in the Marathon race. We started together at the starting point, and the atmosphere is about the same as last year, many runners and supporters gathering at the starting point.

Along the race, we saw a few weird runners again. This time round, we saw a runner having a car wheel tire tied to his body while he was running. Other than that, we also noticed a Japanese old man wearing a thick Japanese costume and a hat while during his run. In the later part of the race, I also saw 2 more other weird person. 1 of them was wearing a Spiderman suit and the other was wearing a Batman suit while they were running.

As the race proceed on, the sky begin to get dark and it started to rain a bit along the east coast park route that we were running. Actually, the rain came just in time, as it helps to cool down the heat. However, the same thing happened this year again, as I do not have the time to train for the marathon this year, I also started to walk after passing the 20+km mark. I was walked together with my classmate and jogged a bit if possible for a 1+km or so.

In addition to that, I also suffered a blister at the back of my leg, as it was caused by the short socks that I was wearing and the continuous rubbing of my leg and my running shoe. As it caused some pain during the run, I have to get handi plast from the St.John personnel to cover up the blister in order to continue running. If I did not remembered wrongly, I have changed a total of 5 handi plast during the last 10km of the race.

Following that, when I approached the 37km mark, I was actually feeling very tired and sleepy too and my classmate was accompanied by my side. After enduring to the 39km mark, I finally get to have some 100plus drink to recover. However I also started to vomit out the fluid as I think my body was not able to take it. After resting for a while, I continued the race with my classmate and walked for the rest of the race. But that so not all, in the 41km, I stopped again to vomit out the fluid near the side. It was quite a bad experience for me, vomiting and endurance the slight pain at my leg’s blister.

But that does not stop me from finishing the race, since I have written my reason on the tag to “THE WILL TO WIN - Start and End the Race with Determination”, so I cannot give up at this point of time as this reminds me also not to give up with what you have started. Next as both of us approached close to the 42km mark, we started to run and speed up a bit to finish the race together in front of Padang with the same timing of 6hr 41min 0sec. Actually this timing was quite a disappointing result compared to last year result of 5 hours 37 min 4 sec. But it was great to complete the Marathon race once again with the help, encouragement and accompany of my classmate, Wei Rong. I really thank him for that. I also like to congratulate him for completing his 1st marathon race of his life. Good Job man Ü

After the race, we took a few photos together with my poly classmate, Kelvin Teo whom also joined the race this year, before we left the place. In the end, I did mention to the 2 of them that this may be my last marathon that I may run, as I think I may not be totally fit for that. But due to some contradicting of myself, I still feel that I may want to take up the 3rd marathon next year, but still cannot confirm whether I am really ready and up for it or not. If really going to take up the challenge again, think I really need to get some advice on long distance marathon race, cant be vomiting all time round in the race correct….

Hai…. Anyone can give me some advices??
