On Saturday, 7th April 2007 afternoon, I went for a historical tour visit to the Bukit Brown Cemetery (near Kheam Hock Road) organized by the API. The tour was also opened to the public and is FOC. If I am not wrong, about 60+ or even more people turn up for the tour.
The tour started at 2pm after all the participants reached the venue via the free charter coach provided. Among the crowd, I noticed most of them are uncles and aunties with also some youngsters and a few ang mohs.
Anyway, the tour was quite an interesting one, as I got to learn roughly how to read the relationship of the deceases to that of tomb erector and the provinces in tombstone. In addition, I also learnt whether the decreases name on the tombstone is a genuine name by identifying a Chinese character and also learn how to read the Chinese Dynastic Calendar from 1368 to 1949.
Along the designated route, we visited quite a number of famous pioneers' tombs and we even visited the largest tomb in Singapore with the size of ten 3-room HDB flat discovered in May 2006. (See 2 photos below). Amazing so big!! After that, when the API tour guide was showing us the oldest tomb in 1844, we found yet another older tomb (1842) by coincidence. Ha (See below right photo below)
As we proceed on to other tombs, the sky turned dark followed by quite a heavy downpour. Unlucky... As the rain was not able to stop in a short time, hence the organizer called for an early finish to the tour. So we were not able to complete the whole tour for the remaining of the tombs of interest. But if I did not hear wrongly, the API said that they were arranged for another visit to the Bukit Brown Cemetery again another time due to the heavy downpour.
Overall, it was still quite an interesting tour and I will go for the repeated tour again when they announced it later. Anyone wants to join me?? hehe
