Yesterday, 8 Nov 2008, I took part in the NS Portal mobiHunt 2008 race with my 2 army friends, ZS, and TN and our team name is “MNK” (originated from our intials). This event organized by NCS - Portal City was held for the first time last year and the event is back again this year with more fun.

The 3 of us took part in this mobile treasure hunt race for the first time this year and we also searched for some information on last year’s race.

Below is an article on mobiHunt 2007

The treasure hunt race is about taking any mode of transport to the various predetermined checkpoints across 9 checkpoints – Mount Faber Safra, then Holland Village, Raffles Town Club, Velocity @ Novena Square, TANGS Orchard, Kaplan @ Starhub Centre, Marina Square, NTUC HQ and Vivocity.

In the race, teams will receive location based content of the Singapore landmarks and answering the MCQ based questions received on the mobile phones that were sent by the location based technology “MESH” (Mobile eServices Hub) developed by NCS Pte Ltd.

We arrived at Mount Faber Safra around 9.30am on the event day for reporting and each team were given the instruction and route map for the race. We sat down at 1 corner to discuss on the route to take to all the 9 checkpoints since we will be traveling around with the help of my friend’s car. Basically we distributed out our own role into Captain, Signaler & Driver (ZS), Scout, Navigator & Snipper-Photographer (Me) and Scout, Surfer & Signaler (TN), accompanied our so called “M113” civilian car. Haha. Back to army days again…

The teams were flagged off in 3 groups at interval of 20 min starting at 10.15am and our team was in the 2nd group. When our group was flagged off at around 10.35am, all teams rushed off to pick up their vehicle, take bus, MRT or taxi. As we rushed off to the car and driving to the first destination, we received the first question asking about which anniversary RSAF is celebrating this year.

We were surprised as we should have received the question at the starting point and look for the answer. However it was lucky that my friend brought the laptop along and we were able to look for the answer on the internet during our way to the 1st checkpoint at Holland Village. Haha. Ü
Arriving at the 1st checkpoint in Holland V, we should have received the MCQ based question when they detect the presence of our phone with the help of the MESH application installed on the phone, but there was no response to it, so the marshal helped us to call the organizer to push out the questions for us to answer and submit on the mobile phone. I think we need to push out most of the questions, except for the checkpoint at TANGS Orchard.

After answering the first question about the major construction @ Holland V, we rushed to our next checkpoint at Raffles Town Club where we need to find the colour of a sign and proceeded to Velocity@ Novena Square to find out which year Novena Square was renamed as Velocity @ Novena Square. Following that we moved on to TANGS Orchard to count the no. of D&G watches displayed in the showcase…

After that, we rushed off to the Kaplan @ Starhub Centre near Centrepoint to look for clue on the colour of the brochure for a particular course and then proceed on to Marina Square where we need to answer 3 questions on Action City, Price for a pair of Salomon XT Wings Shoe and the historical use of Asian Civilisation Museum. We also redeemed each a keychain at the Action City using the mVoucher in the phone.

Our last 2nd checkpoint was at NTUC HQ where we need to find out what the color of NTUC logo means before we proceed to our last checkpoint at Vivocity where we need to count the no. of water fountain outside the main entrance of Vivocity. Once we submitted the last answer at Vivocity, the completion time was recorded in the MESH server. Before we proceed back to Safra, we redeemed each a donut at the Dipping Donut in Vivocity. How thoughtful is the organizer that they scared we are hungry during the race and most of us may not have our lunch. Hehe. Our team finished the race at around 1pm, which we took around 2hr 20min to complete.

Next, we proceed back to Safra where we attended the prize giving and lucky draw ceremony. During the announcement of the winner, we thought we may still have chance to get into the top 3 since we completed our race quite fast already, except for some Traffic Jam at Orchard along the way. However we were a bit disappointed when we were announced as 1 of the 20 consolation winners in the Fastest Challenge (All/Most questions answered correct and fastest time to complete the questions) and ZS and I also won WOS vouchers in the lucky draw. Still considered not bad already. Ü

The overall winner for the Fastest Challenge goes to a couple completing the race in 1hr 30min (93 min) and they won themselves a total of $1500 cash. The first runnerup and second runnerup won themselves $1000 and $500 respectively. Wah. The winner so fast. They fly to their checkpoints is it !? haha. After some discussion, our team came out with the conclusion that the couple may be using motorbike to travel to all the checkpoints as there is no need for them to find parking spot and they can squeeze through cars during a traffic jam also. Haha. But ultimately we still don’t know how they do it as we were making some wild guesses only.

Overall, the race was a fun and enjoyable one as every participants get to learn some history, facts and information at each of the checkpoints and the race also challenge us for our speed, accuracy, planning and teamwork. For our team, our strategy was not to find any parking lots at all (except for some checkpoints), with 1 driver remain in the car while the other 2 of us rush to the checkpoint to answer question and then communicate back to the driver to fetch us with a walkie talkie when we are done. This help to save a lot of time during the process.

The organizer has announced that they would organize this mobiHunt event next year and probably making a large scale treasure hunt around Singapore, but it has yet to confirm on the scale. The 3 of us promised to take part in next year’s mobiHunt again to challenge with time if date permits. Haha. See U again next year. ZS and TN. Hehe.
