Yesterday, 22 September 2007 was a Family Day event for my working company at the Sentosa Siloso Beach. Apart from the usual gathering, makan session and mini games, a few of my colleagues and classmate formed a team to participate and compete with the other 8 teams in the amazing race that the REC club had organized.
The amazing race game basically require the team members to search answers to clues (points varies for different clues) both in the city area and sentosa to gain clue points and finish together as a team with the fastest timing, not exceeding the 3 hours allowance. The team with the highest points obtained from the Clues and Time finish will be the winner and get to received cash rewards for the team social fund.
We started off the amazing race at the company with the clues given to us. Each team got the similar clues but the other teams started off 5 minutes after the previous team started. In addition to that, we also received a race pack consisted of $50 allowance for transport and clue answer purchase, sentosa maps, pens, a notebook, water bottles + same colour wrist band each for each team. The other stuffs that we needed to prepare ourselves were digital camera (taking evidence for our clues) and Singapore map.
Our team (Team 2) received the clues at 9.05am and reorganized and separated the clues into 2 locations, city area and sentosa. After that, our team split into 2 groups, my colleague, PK chose to search for clues at the sentosa with other 2 members, while I chose the City area clues with my classmate, GL and other 2 members. After that, we went separate ways to search for the answers to the clues. Now my slim street directory comes in handy in use.
At first, my group ran to the MRT station thinking whether to solve 2 clues at the MRT (buy 3 standard MRT tickets + malay message at the MRT platform), but after some thinking, we decided to take a cab together to Fullerton Hotel in searching for the first answer at the Cavenagh Bridge, but got it wrong. After that, we also counted the number of orange canopies on the outside curve of the Singapore River between Cavenagh Bridge and Elgin Bridge. Later GL discovered a directory showing the answer to another clue, hence we ran to the Dalhousie Obelisk plaque near Cavenagh Bridge to take a photo for evidence.
After that, we doubled up to Victoria Concert Hall to obtain another answer for the “Name for the King of Siam in 1871”. Following that, we moved on to North Bridge Road to count the number of shops selling food between Funan Centre and Raffles City (This one was tricky, and we got it wrong again). Then we moved down to City Hall MRT station to purchase 3 standard tickets as 1 of the answer required and obtain the malay message for the MRT platform from the lady at the Passenger Service Counter. Hence we saved the time and $$ of getting down the platform to look for the answer. Haha. (Luckily the first stop we chosen was at Fullerton Hotel, if not the route will not be so smooth)
After finishing with all the clues at the city area, we took cab again to Vivocity and ride on the mono-rail towards Beach Station and also took the Sentosa Tram to get to the Siloso Beach to meet up with my other group, PK & his members stationed at Sentosa to search for answers there.
However, PK was not able to obtain all the answers for his clues as majority of the 30+ clues was at Sentosa. Then one team even approached us to ask where the finishing line is, but we did not answer them, since we were still deciding to cross the finishing line without solving the other clues @ Sentosa. But as we panic that they might cross the finishing line faster than us, hence we decided to give up the rest of the clue points and finish the race as the first team instead at 11.22am with timing of 2hr 17min, since the first team to finish the race get 200 time points regardless of whether we found all the answers or not.
Later on the other subsequent teams finishing later got deduction of 5 points per minutes slower from the first team finish timing. That’s scary, but that’s our strategy to eliminate other team time points. However another team started the race 5 minutes earlier than us also finished the race few minutes after us and they got quite a lot of clues correct also (Some even search answers from internet…)
Following that, we took a rest inside the pavilion and took a team photo for our amazing race and then enjoyed the free buffet lunch to fill up our hungry stomach. After lunch, we chatted with each other and waited for the game organizer to tabulate the result for the amazing race. After 3 hours long wait, they finally announced the amazing race result and our team were really lucky to beat all the other teams including the 2nd fastest team with a 10+ points difference to crown the winner. Haha. Yeah. Ü
It was a great Saturday, playing this amazing race game, searching for answers to clues and racing against time to be the winner. Hehe.
