(Article on the Phyically Disabled particpant)
(Stage and female participants at holding area)
Last Sunday, 16 Nov 2008, I took part in the Swissotel vertical marathon once again with KT for the 3rd time. As usual, we need to report first at the counter before we get our number tag and champion chip. Upon reporting, we realized we have registered in the different category. KT registered for the Men’s Open and I registered for the Men’s 20 -29. Hence both of us will start our race at different timing.
This time round, I challenged myself for the 73 storey once again, but this time I failed to maintain or break my timing that I obtained last year. My timing this year is much more slower at 13.51 min. Almost 2 minutes slower…. Getting weaker and weaker… No Training…
Anyway, we observed a new record set by an elite participant from Germany, Mr Thomas Dold, who completed his climb to the top of 73 storey with a recorded timing of 6.52min, 3 seconds faster than the timing set my Mr Balvinder Singh set back in 1989 (19 years ago since the event started). As such, he entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for his new record timing and got a chance to take part in the Empire State Run up in Feb 2009.
Other than that, I also noticed a malay young man who is physically disabled on 1 arm also took part in the race and I am proud of his courage. The last person not to be missed out is the 81 years old uncle (turning 82 soon) who took part in the race every year. He challenged the ultimate limit again which many elderly may not dare to take up at such age. I really admire him. Cheers!!
Upon completing my race, I took a few photos at the Helipad on 73 storey and also helped KT to take photos also when he finished his race in the other category. We also got to chance to have a chat with the Men’s Champion, Mr Thomas Dold and took a photo with him. Haha
Anyway, My next climbing challenge will be the National Vertical Marathon 2009 to be organized by NTU early next year. Will I be able to break my timing and fail again??
