Thymectomy

One uncommon surgery name that I have not come across before until I know that my mum has to go through this surgery process for her MG illness.

It is a surgical removal operation of the thymus gland (tumor called thymoma) located in the front portion of the chest, behind the breastbone. About 10 – 15% of the Myasthesnia Gavis (MG) Patients have thymoma and it is recommended to be removed to improve the weakness caused by MG for patients younger than 60 and who are otherwise heathy. Other factor for removal of tumor is that the tumor may become cancerous even though of the tumor is harmless at intial stage.

Information on Thymectomy:

Previously in my older blog post this year, I mentioned that my mum was unfortunate to have this MG illness and a tumors behind her breastbone during a CT scan. See blog post below

Thymectomy was supposed to be carried out on her in Jan/Feb this year but her condition got worst that year. After a 1+months of treatment in hospital and regular medication at home, the surgery doctor has recommended the surgery can be carried out on her on 1 Oct 2009 after some reviews and she needs to be admitted to hospital today for close observation and preparation this few days before the surgery date.

Later today, I will be accompanying my mum to hospital for admission at 4pm. Now the surgery is in a few days time and I hope that everything goes smoothly for the surgery and she has the strong determination to gone through the recovery stage after the surgery. I understand that she has gone though a tough treatment during the past few months in hospital when her condition got worst. It is really hard on her…

Ganbate for her. : )
