Operation Day…1 Oct 2009

Today, I took a day leave from work to accompany my mum for her operation at NUH to remove the tumor located in the front portion of the chest, behind the breastbone. This tumor has some relationship with her MG illness that she has right now. The operation name is called Thymectomy which was mentioned in my earlier blog post below.

Until last night when we visited her at the normal ward, we were still not informed about the timing of the surgery, but the doctor on duty last night told us the operation may be conducted during noon time, as the surgeons need to carry out another operation in the morning.

It was only when my family members and I went to the hospital today before noon time, then we were informed that the operation would be conducted at around 2 or 2+pm. My mum actually stopped consuming any food from midnight last evening to prepare for the surgery.
At around 1pm, my mum was pushed to the Operation Theatre (OT) for final preparation for the surgery to start at 2pm. I accompanied her there and started my long wait for the surgery to be completed.

From 1+pm onwards after my mum was pushed into the IT, I waited in the visitor lounge outside the OT with other visitor there. I was told by the nurse that, the doctor will give me a call when the surgery is completed. From there, I started to wait for the operation to complete and about 1 to 2 hours interval, I received calls or sms asking the operation status but it was not over yet.
It was until 6pm, I started to ask the OT receptionist about the operation status and they told me the operation was about to completed soon. The surgeon assistant actually told me that the operation would last about 3 to 4 hours if everything goes smoothly, so that was why I only asked for status at 6pm.

At about 6.40pm, I finally received a call from the surgeon from the OT saying that they have completed the operation and everything went smoothly with the tumor removed. My mum was later transferred to the ICU ward for further observation on her breathing before she could be transferred to the normal ward. Now it will depends on how fast my mum can recover after the operation.

It is the first time in my life waiting outside the OT for such a long hours for my loved one to complete an operation, but it is still worth the waiting.

Finally really thanks the surgeons for the work done and for those who asked about the operation status, especially my manager and 1 of my friends, HP who shown their concern though sms and another friend, JT and colleagues who show the concern though email.
