Visit to Peranakan Museum

(View of Peranakan Museum from outside)

Last weekend, I went to the new officially opened Peranakan Museum for a visit as it was opening festival and is FOC on those 2 weekends. It is actually situated at the former Asian Civilisations Museum at 39 Armenian Street, near the old National Library site and Fort Canning Park.

It is nice to learn and expose to something new which I have not come across before. As a brief introduction, Peranakans are the descendants of traders from distant lands and SouthEast Asia local women when they settled down and married the local women. It has been historically recorded for centuries. In Malay term, “Peranakan” means “Child of” or “locally born” and it is usually used to refer to people of mixed ethnic origins. Below is the full explanation of Peranakans in English & Chinese.

The building has 3 storeys and there are a total of 10 galleries & special exhibition galleries for visitors to learn about the lifestyle and culture of the Peranakan. It will probably take some time to finish walking and viewing all the galleries if you want to observe all the artifacts carefully. For me, I think I took quite some time since I was busy viewing and taking photos along the way.
